The Sketchbooks of John Samuel Blunt [Color]

Product Description
John Samuel Blunt was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During his brief career he is known to have executed miniatures, ship ornaments and signage, as well as portraits, landscapes, and marine art. Works by Blunt can be seen in many collections accessible to the public including the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection, Williamsburg, Virginia; the American Folk Art Museum, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; New Bedford Whaling Museum, New Bedford, MA; Portsmouth Athenaeum, Portsmouth Historical Society and Strawbery Banke Museum, all of Portsmouth, NH. Deborah Child has followed the meager and elusive documentary and visual trail left by Blunt through the centuries and generations to uncover an astounding body of rarely seen sketches and images that vividly reflect the picturesque landscape of the Seacoast Region. Ms. Child shows that Blunt was on the leading edge of the development of the Romantic Movement in American art. About the Author: Deborah M. Child is an independent art historian and museum consultant based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She is a graduate of the Master of Arts program at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. For the last five years she has been researching Piscataqua painting of the Federal period, with a special interest in genealogy and provenance searches. Since 2005, she has been project curator for the John Samuel Blunt Catalogue Raisonné Project at the Portsmouth Athenaeum.
